Dear Kehlani, Here’s An Open Letter For You

kehlani

Over the years, social media has become everyone’s favorite spot to share their thoughts, feelings, and quick remarks on anything which is everything going on in the world. Whether it’s pop culture, their daily routines, or a big historic event, there are no rules to the social media game.

By now, I’m sure you’re all aware of what the Toronto rapper, PartyNextDoor posted on Intagram, which resulted in Kehlani deleting her Snapchat and Instagram account.

However, the R&B singer then posted a heartfelt post that not only opened my eyes, but made me realized something that we as fans don’t often see. Yes, we idolize our favorite artists, but truth is that we don’t see beyond that light.

Trying to live a healthy life within the media-industry adds a lot of pressure to be perfect as well as cyber bullying.Being a celebrity is extremely difficult and can be a lonely journey, as suddenly everyone you knew changes, and all of a sudden, everyone’s your friend. In many occasions, you begin to pull away and find you can only trust a very small group of people – perhaps those “close” friends.

Your hometown also becomes difficult to travel in, and as you get more famous and recognized, it becomes impossible to go out in public.

The other big stress of the job is the constant threat that you could lose everything. There is absolutely no job security, and a couple bad movies in a row, and you could find the phone doesn’t ring any more. Even with the fame that you have, you constantly have to hustle one way or another.

Nonetheless, the 20-year-old is seen as a female version of a hustle, she’s the voice of many young girls who can relate to her and her music. Yet, too many times, people forget that celebrities like her are humans just like you and me. We often think that since they have all the fame and glory that they can’t be suffering inside.

Last night (March 28), while half the world of social media was throwing shade at Kehlani, she was in the hospital fighting to live, which proves that life is a constant battle.

I’ve had the opportunity of seeing Kehlani in concert twice, and the way she connects with her fan is beautiful. She not only is a voice for the younger generation, but shows them that it’s okay to be vulnerable. Take her heartfelt song “The Letter” for example.

In one of her recent IG posts, the You Should Be Here singer opened up her struggle of accepting herself and what others don’t understand is that we all go through dark moments, some tougher than other. And while cyber bullying might be a big factor, there’s always someone there for you willing to help – that ONE friend.

At the end of the day, we’re all humans and go through things that we can’t change, but know that you’re not alone (Kehlani, you’re not alone). We need you to continue being the light of many young girls, and while you continue to fight your struggle, we’ll stand right beside YOU.

Lani, you’re wroth!

Women’s History Month: Top 10 Women Killing The Game

To celebrate Women’s History Month, here’s a list of empowering women (in no particular order) that are currently making waves and practicing confidence through their music.
1. Rihanna
With the release of her ‘ANTI’ album, Rihanna has been topping the charts. Why do we love RiRi? She keeps it real, raw and nothing holds her back. Her lyrics let women know that we can be ourselves, a little risky and still be sexy!

2. Beyonce
Well, they do call her Queen B for a reason! She’s been making hit records ever since Destiny’s Child and has managed to set a great example of what an empowering women is capable of. With her massive fanbase, Bey is never afraid to speak up on issues that play an influence in her life such as the controversial “Formation” video.

3. Erykah Badu
This Neo-Soul queen knows how to add her own flavor to anything. Her lyrics make you feel right at home because of their truth and expressive vibes. She can make any women sit back and reflect with her very soft vocals. We love Erykah!

4. Adele
Adele is a phenomenon around the world and has managed to release a hit album this year that can make anyone swoon and cry, at the same time. Not only is she powerful, but she’s always comfortable in her own skin. She doesn’t conform to societies view of beauty and manages to remain a curvy women with her own style. Adele, we love you!

5. FKA TWIGS
Not only does she love rice pudding (which I noticed because I spotted her at rice to riches in Soho, NY) but she also has some incredible music. Her vocals make anyone want to listen for more and she lets women know that you can be your own kind of weird, unique and entirely yourself.

6. Tinashe
This rising diva has managed to show off her dance moves while being able to hit those high notes. She’s a young star with a bright future and we love her for showing women that age doesn’t define you. Team Tinashe!

7. Kehlani
Putting on for Oak Town and remaining true to herself, this young lady has managed to show women that you can be whoever you want to be as long as you put in the work! With two amazing mix tapes and some hot ink, Kehlani has managed to create one of the biggest underground brands.
8. Alessia Cara
Ever felt awkward at a party? Well, Alessia has too. With her hit single “Here”, she’s managed to show women all around the world that you can feel awkward and still be beautiful or great at what you do. Plus, you don’t have to be a party girl to be cool.

9. LEAF
This upcoming songstress is finally releasing new music and recently released an RnBass hit entitled “Ride For You”. I’ve had my eyes open to LEAF’s ongoing growth and talent, and I must say, as a fan I am super proud. She’s coming into her own self and showing us that greatness takes time, but it isn’t impossible.
10. Seinabo Sey
New favorite artist, who manages to create some of the greatest lyrical content while keeping listeners engaged, has managed to rise in both the UK and the states. She’s different, she’s edgy and she is entirely herself. She is yet another example of a women that is comfortable in her own skin and is teaching other women that they should feel comfortable too.

Happy Women’s History Month!

How Producer Jahaan Sweet met Kehlani and their work behind Grammy nominated mixtape “You Should Be Here”

Jahaan Sweet

Florida-native and producer Jahaan Sweet heard a distinct voice coming from a NY studio booth a couple years ago.  At the time he was finishing up his Jazz studies at the prestigious music school, Juilliard. It was the voice of Oakland’s Kehlani and in a matter of time the two began working together on her 2014 mixtape “Cloud 9″, which eventually became her 2015 breakthrough mixtape, “You Should Be Here”.

I walked in and heard this voice. I thought ‘Man, who is that person singing? She’s really, really good’. I just went in and played this beat I was working on at the time. It’s for the song we did called “Get Away” and from there we just started working.

At 22-years old, Sweet has worked with artists such as Tiara Thomas and K. Michelle. He produced 6 out of the 15 tracks on YSBH. It has been nominated for a Grammy under Best Urban Contemporary Album, along with The Internet’s “Ego Death”, Lianne La Havas’ “Blood“, Miguel’s “Wildheart” and The Weeknd’s “Beauty Behind The Madness“.

Would you say “You Should Be Here” is your biggest project to date?

I feel “You Should Be Here” was my first time really being able to just do me, to just exercise my creativity and have a good say on it. Plus we both like the same kind of music and she’s a really good songwriter so it’s a good marriage of musical ideas.

The project is now Grammy nominated. Congrats. How’s that feel?

We found out on the European tour. We were in London. Someone called and told her and we freaked out. It was amazing and now just the idea of being nominated, we really wanna win.

Was a Grammy nomination ever in mind?

Nah. Not even. I was just happy we finished it and we got it out. To have all this great success off of it, it’s a blessing. For me, just being on stage and playing piano live…I’m just grateful and looking forward to what’s next.

What’s your favorite song on the mixtape?

The Way. I played the beat for her when she came to NY to do one more week of recording and she said “I’m not really feeling it”. On the final day of her trip, I played the beat for her again and she said “You never played this for me,” (laughs) and she wrote the song in like 20 minutes and we sent it off Chance.

Will you be involved with Keh’s upcoming projects?

Right now I’m dealing with her actual debut album and we’re coming close to finishing it. I’ve been putting a lot of focus into that.

What else is next for you?

I just want to keep working and become better at what I do.

Check out Sweet on the piano and Kehlani on the mic while on her 2015 European tour.
