Dear Kehlani, Here’s An Open Letter For You

kehlani

Over the years, social media has become everyone’s favorite spot to share their thoughts, feelings, and quick remarks on anything which is everything going on in the world. Whether it’s pop culture, their daily routines, or a big historic event, there are no rules to the social media game.

By now, I’m sure you’re all aware of what the Toronto rapper, PartyNextDoor posted on Intagram, which resulted in Kehlani deleting her Snapchat and Instagram account.

However, the R&B singer then posted a heartfelt post that not only opened my eyes, but made me realized something that we as fans don’t often see. Yes, we idolize our favorite artists, but truth is that we don’t see beyond that light.

Trying to live a healthy life within the media-industry adds a lot of pressure to be perfect as well as cyber bullying.Being a celebrity is extremely difficult and can be a lonely journey, as suddenly everyone you knew changes, and all of a sudden, everyone’s your friend. In many occasions, you begin to pull away and find you can only trust a very small group of people – perhaps those “close” friends.

Your hometown also becomes difficult to travel in, and as you get more famous and recognized, it becomes impossible to go out in public.

The other big stress of the job is the constant threat that you could lose everything. There is absolutely no job security, and a couple bad movies in a row, and you could find the phone doesn’t ring any more. Even with the fame that you have, you constantly have to hustle one way or another.

Nonetheless, the 20-year-old is seen as a female version of a hustle, she’s the voice of many young girls who can relate to her and her music. Yet, too many times, people forget that celebrities like her are humans just like you and me. We often think that since they have all the fame and glory that they can’t be suffering inside.

Last night (March 28), while half the world of social media was throwing shade at Kehlani, she was in the hospital fighting to live, which proves that life is a constant battle.

I’ve had the opportunity of seeing Kehlani in concert twice, and the way she connects with her fan is beautiful. She not only is a voice for the younger generation, but shows them that it’s okay to be vulnerable. Take her heartfelt song “The Letter” for example.

In one of her recent IG posts, the You Should Be Here singer opened up her struggle of accepting herself and what others don’t understand is that we all go through dark moments, some tougher than other. And while cyber bullying might be a big factor, there’s always someone there for you willing to help – that ONE friend.

At the end of the day, we’re all humans and go through things that we can’t change, but know that you’re not alone (Kehlani, you’re not alone). We need you to continue being the light of many young girls, and while you continue to fight your struggle, we’ll stand right beside YOU.

Lani, you’re wroth!
