Beyonce’s currently trending surprise video to “Formation” gave society some very powerful messages. Dropped a day before Bey’s anticipated Super Bowl performance and during Black History Month, Queen B speaks volumes of racism and police brutality in this video.
The video takes place in what seems to be the ruins of Hurricane Katrina. The hook of the song touches on constant media attack on her daughter, husband and her proud Southern background.
“My daddy Alabama, Momma Louisiana / You mix that negro with that Creole make a Texas bamma / I like my baby hair, with baby hair and afros / I like my negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils.”
The video includes artwork of Martin Luther King Jr., the message “Stop shooting us,” and a little black boy dancing in front of a police squad who raise their hands on his cue. Beyonce, dressed in all black, gives not one, but two middle fingers in the air. The question is, to who?
Blue Ivy also makes an appearance in the video looking like the star that she is!
The most powerful scene in the video, however, would have to be the end, when Beyonce sinks a cop car that reads “New Orleans Police” on the window.
“Formation” was co-written by Rae Sremmurd’s Swae Lee while the video was directed by Beyonce herself.
Will Beyonce be performing this song at tomorrow’s Super Bowl? We hope so!
