21 Years Later, Selena Quintanilla’s Legacy Is Stronger Than Ever

Selena-Quintanilla

21 years later, and the death of rising Tejano star Selena Quintanilla legacy continues to grow despite her absence.

From the catchy and upbeat “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” to the love ballad “I Could Fall In Love,” the then 23-year-old singer left the world too soon on March 31, 1995. Despite the decades that have passed, the Grammy winner lives on thanks to the help of thousands of devoted fans.

Here are a few reasons why Selena’s legacy is stronger than ever and will never be forgotten.

Millions of Latinos Relate To Her Bi-Cultural Life

Selena was an international singing sensation who sold out stadiums, but lived in a modest home next door to her parents. She dressed provocatively and was called “The Mexican Madonna,” yet she married her first and only boyfriend. And like so many Latinos, she navigated two cultures and managed to be comfortable in both. In fact, Selena was not a native Spanish speaker. Her Latin music career was already taking off when she decided to study Spanish, so that she could feel more confident expressing herself.

She Was More Than Just Musically Talent

Selena the performer became Selena the “icon.” Like other celebrities who passed away too soon, Selena has become larger than life, almost legendary. When it came to her performances, Selena not only brought her beautiful voice onstage but also her own designs. The singer began to design her clothes at the early age of 10.

She Was On Her Way Up and Seemed Unstoppable

In her early 20s, Selena became the first Tejano artist to win a Grammy award in 1993. She old-out multiple arenas, and was on her way to true success within the English-American culture as well.

Her Life Has Influence Some Of Today’s Stars

The Hollywood film, “Selena,” based on her life was the breakthrough role for Jennifer Lopez. Since then J.Lo’s career has reached unimaginable heights of success. Ex-Disney star and pop-singer Selena Gomez mentioned in an interview that she was named after the Tejano superstar.

Selena’s Presence Is Felt In Today’s Fashion

Selena’s fashion has inspired many of today’s artists with her signature red-lipstick, high-waisted pants, crop (short) tops, and big-loop earings.

Including Toronto native, Drizzy Drake. Here he is wearing a Selena shirt during a recording session last year.

She Had An American Dream Too

As an American child, Selena’s dream was always to reach success in the English market. The day her life was tragically cut short, Selena was expected at the studio to work on her first English-language album Dreaming Of You. She was at the start of her rise to fame in the crossover market.

Thank you, Selena!

Rihanna brings in $34M to Puma

Well, we’re sure Puma is happy with their decision of making Rihanna their Creative Director. Just last year, the sneaker company added Riri to their team and reports have just announced that over this past year, Puma beat their average projections by a nice $34.5 million!

It’s no mystery why this is. Rihanna’s latest collection of “Creeper” and “Eskiva” sneakers were completely bought out from every shelf.

Puma now has a “Fenty by Rihanna” collection on the way for 2016. Maybe Pumas are the new sneakers of the year!
