Anderson .Paak’s “Malibu” (Album Review)

Anderson-Paak

Drummer, rapper, producer and songwriter Brandon Paak Anderson or better known by his stage name Anderson .Paak has released his latest project “Malibu“. Born in Oxnard, California, Paak saw both of his parents go to jail by the time he was 18. As an adult, he became homeless along with his wife and son after he lost his job in a marijuana farm and it’s no doubt these experiences had an influence on this project.

“Bout the year Drizzy and Cole dropped,
Before K-Dot had it locked,
I was sleeping on the floor
Newborn baby boy trying to get my money pot
So wifey wouldn’t get deported”

With a twist of Motown, soul, hip-hop and funk accompanied by Paak’s edgy voice, the project gives you on outlook on his family, relationships and the come-up. He talks about the foundation of an honest relationship and his appreciation of love.

“I want you by my lonesome above this crowded space,
It’s easier to hold some when no one’s in the way.
Well if no one’s in the running for the part,
I’d love to pick a day.”

If you can appreciate the artistry of instruments, then this is an album worth listening too. With a mixture of piano, drums and guitar; the 16-track album features artists such as ScHoolBoy Q, Talib Kweli, The Game, Rapsody and BJ the Chicago Kid. Paak’s personality comes through as passionate and humble.

Paak’s lyrics also carry a poetic sense.

“I had to wake up just to make it through,
I got my patience and I’m making do.
I learned my lessons from the ancient roots.
I choose to follow what the greatest do.”

The overall sound of the album and his performance can be compared to Kendrick Lamar’s “How To Pimp A Butterfly.” Recommended songs to listen to are “The Season/Carry Me” and “Without You.

Check out the track list and cover art. You can also download “Malibu” right here.
