The Weeknd Talks Music Success & More With Los Angeles Times

The Weeknd

The Weeknd is stopping at nothing to prove that he’s one of the biggest artists thus far.

In a detailed interview with Los Angeles Times, the Toronto, Canada native shared his struggles and success within the music industry.

The Beauty Behind The Madness crooner mentions how going back home is what keeps him humble. He says, “It’s crazy, I took January off. Well kinda, I can’t really take a day off, I’m always working. But I took the month off and I went back home to Toronto which is a safe haven — nobody knows where you are, no paps, no anything. I just slept for a week straight. I didn’t speak for like two weeks to get my voice back because we were singing so much last year, especially the last half of the year. It was just so relaxing.”

Abel also states that it was quite tough coming up when no one really knew about him. He then continues to say how being apart of Coachella last year was his revenge for the music industry. “That was the best feeling. It was a big moment. That was like my revenant, pretty much. I came back from the dead. It was revenge in the best way possible. And I hope to do it again.”

Read up on the entire interview with The Weeknd on L.A Times, and of course, don’t forget to catch him performing at the Grammy‘s Monday night (February 15).

How Producer Jahaan Sweet met Kehlani and their work behind Grammy nominated mixtape “You Should Be Here”

Jahaan Sweet

Florida-native and producer Jahaan Sweet heard a distinct voice coming from a NY studio booth a couple years ago.  At the time he was finishing up his Jazz studies at the prestigious music school, Juilliard. It was the voice of Oakland’s Kehlani and in a matter of time the two began working together on her 2014 mixtape “Cloud 9″, which eventually became her 2015 breakthrough mixtape, “You Should Be Here”.

I walked in and heard this voice. I thought ‘Man, who is that person singing? She’s really, really good’. I just went in and played this beat I was working on at the time. It’s for the song we did called “Get Away” and from there we just started working.

At 22-years old, Sweet has worked with artists such as Tiara Thomas and K. Michelle. He produced 6 out of the 15 tracks on YSBH. It has been nominated for a Grammy under Best Urban Contemporary Album, along with The Internet’s “Ego Death”, Lianne La Havas’ “Blood“, Miguel’s “Wildheart” and The Weeknd’s “Beauty Behind The Madness“.

Would you say “You Should Be Here” is your biggest project to date?

I feel “You Should Be Here” was my first time really being able to just do me, to just exercise my creativity and have a good say on it. Plus we both like the same kind of music and she’s a really good songwriter so it’s a good marriage of musical ideas.

The project is now Grammy nominated. Congrats. How’s that feel?

We found out on the European tour. We were in London. Someone called and told her and we freaked out. It was amazing and now just the idea of being nominated, we really wanna win.

Was a Grammy nomination ever in mind?

Nah. Not even. I was just happy we finished it and we got it out. To have all this great success off of it, it’s a blessing. For me, just being on stage and playing piano live…I’m just grateful and looking forward to what’s next.

What’s your favorite song on the mixtape?

The Way. I played the beat for her when she came to NY to do one more week of recording and she said “I’m not really feeling it”. On the final day of her trip, I played the beat for her again and she said “You never played this for me,” (laughs) and she wrote the song in like 20 minutes and we sent it off Chance.

Will you be involved with Keh’s upcoming projects?

Right now I’m dealing with her actual debut album and we’re coming close to finishing it. I’ve been putting a lot of focus into that.

What else is next for you?

I just want to keep working and become better at what I do.

Check out Sweet on the piano and Kehlani on the mic while on her 2015 European tour.

j-cole-ryan-coogler-680x413

Earlier this week, social media was in a frenzy after the news broke that rapper J. Cole was officially off the market.

That’s right, news circulated quick when the 2014 Forest Hills Drive emcee revealed that he was a married man.

The “Power Trip” vocalist sat down on a panel for the special #MLKNow event in New York City on Monday (January 18), where he had an in-dept conversation with Creed’s director Ryan Coogler.

Throughout the 20-minute interview, the director was able to chop it up with the North Carolina native, where they dished upon several topics.

Watch the full interview, and let us know if you enjoyed it in the comments below.

Once he felt like he had been assaulted, it was all downhill...

Once he felt like he had been assaulted, it was all downhill from there.

While the girl interviewing him was being as respectful as she could (you know, compared to the shit that you just read on Twitter timelines and opinions sections), Kellz started feeling piqued after she questioned him about his lyrics and how they related to his personal sex life. He accused her degree of intelligence, tried to stop her from conducting “a deposition” and disrespecting him with negative questions. He even went as far as to say all she needed was evaluations.

The boiling point was at the end when he gave her one last opportunity to ask something and in a moment of frustration, she ripped him with a question directly addressing his past and the way it impacts the way his music is consumed by his fans.

But he did not leave without saying she was amazing and that he loves all his fans.
